Course Overview

About this course

Programming Fundamentals is the starting point for anyone who has never written code or who learned syntax without really understanding it. The course focuses on computational thinking: breaking a problem into steps, representing information as data and expressing the solution in a form a computer can run.

Concepts are introduced with flowcharts and pseudocode first, then practised in a beginner friendly language so you see each idea working. By the end you can read simple programs, write your own and move confidently into Python, C, Java or web development.

Learning Objectives

By the end of Programming Fundamentals, learners should be able to:

  • Break a problem into clear, ordered steps and express them as pseudocode
  • Use variables, data types, operators and expressions correctly
  • Control program flow with conditions and loops
  • Organise code into reusable functions
  • Find and fix common errors using a systematic debugging approach

Topics Covered

01How computers run programs
  • Input, processing and output
  • Source code, compilers and interpreters
  • Setting up a coding environment
02Logic and algorithms
  • Flowcharts and pseudocode
  • Sequencing, selection and repetition
  • Tracing an algorithm by hand
03Data and variables
  • Numbers, text and true or false values
  • Operators and expressions
  • Reading input and printing output
04Decisions and loops
  • if, else and nested conditions
  • for and while loops
  • Loop patterns such as counting, totals and searching
05Functions and structure
  • Parameters and return values
  • Scope
  • Writing small, testable functions
06Collections and problem solving
  • Lists and arrays
  • Simple searching and sorting
  • Mini challenges and a capstone exercise

Topic order and depth may be adjusted for the batch, format and learner level.

Practical Learning

Every module pairs explanation with hands-on work. Typical practical activities in this course:

Daily logic puzzles solved first on paper, then in code

Debugging drills using programs with deliberately planted errors

Pair programming sessions to explain solutions aloud

Timed practice problems of increasing difficulty

Representative Projects

Projects are chosen with mentors based on your level and interests. Examples include:

  • Number guessing game
  • Simple marks and grade calculator
  • Unit converter with a text menu
  • To-do list that stores items in a list

Who Should Join

  • School students curious about coding
  • College students from any stream starting programming
  • Graduates switching into technology
  • Anyone who found programming confusing the first time

Prerequisites

  • No prior coding experience needed
  • Basic comfort using a computer and keyboard

Learning Format

This course can be offered in the following formats, depending on the batch:

  • Short-Term Courses
  • Long-Term Courses
  • Weekend Programs

FAQs

Which language is used in Programming Fundamentals?

Concepts are taught with pseudocode and practised in a beginner friendly language, usually Python, because its syntax lets you focus on logic. The ideas carry over to any language you learn next.

What should I learn after Programming Fundamentals?

Popular next steps are Python Training for data and AI, C Programming for engineering foundations, or HTML, CSS and JavaScript for web development.

Is this course useful if I already know a little coding?

Yes, if you can write code by copying examples but struggle to solve new problems on your own. The course strengthens logic and problem solving, which is the part most self-taught learners skip.

What is the duration and schedule of this course?

Duration, batch timings and format are shared when you enquire, because they depend on whether you choose a short-term, long-term, weekend or training format. Contact the team by phone, WhatsApp or email for current batches.

Is placement assistance available?

Learners can use AIIT Roorkee's placement assistance, which includes career counselling, CV preparation, LinkedIn development, interview preparation and mock interviews. Placement assistance is career preparation support and does not constitute a guarantee of employment or placement.
